Nkiraawanga

Here is an update of the Nkiraawanga building project. Nkiraawanga means God (Nkira) is calling (awanga). In 2009 this place was just a handful of pillars, a few steps, and a dirt floor. When I got to see it last Saturday I stood in the center of that sanctuary in Awe of how God is calling the people to build a church in this place.

Here we are at the recent building committee meeting on Saturday May 28. We learned that before they can begin raising the roof they will have to bring electricity to this area. When that is done the roofing will start. I am hoping that it will happen while I am still here. As the Tanzanians say: "Mungu akipenda." Which means, if God wishes.

You can just barely see the old man in the picture wearing a blue jacket with an orange shirt on, has grey hair and glasses.  His wife died the very next day, she was also the sister of the woman we buried just the Tuesday before that.  The funeral for his wife was attended by most of the Uswaa Parish.  The man's name is Zachariah Munisi and he was the builder of the Uswaa building that I am currently sitting in.  I have been told the story about how over a time span of 20 years Zachariah led the work on building this church, he trained many young men in masonry and construction over those years.  He is a very very well respected man.

You can't fathom how much heart people put into their church, it give me goose bumps to think that Southwood gets to be a part of it.

Thanks be to God!

  1. Is the grid like structure around the outside some sort of scaffolding? Building an important structure requires good leadership, planning, design, and (like you say) an immense amount of heart.

  3. Yes, that is the scaffolding. You would be amazed! John and I have commented that in some ways this building looks like an old relic rather than a brand new building. I think Jim would find the masonry work here very interesting!
